Copenhagen Life Science Summit is a high-level international two-day conference organised by Rigshospitalet and Healthcare Denmark.

Copenhagen Life Science Summit will explore the state of the current EU health ecosystem in a global context highlighting the role for a strong ecosystem approach to European cooperation between industry, academia, public health authorities and patients. The Summit will contribute to the promotion of Europe as a leading life science region, where new innovative health solutions are to the benefit of patients and the European health systems.

Copenhagen Life Science Summit is part of the official conference programme during Denmark’s EU Presidency (July 1 – December 31, 2025), focusing on the life science sector in a European context.

Copenhagen Life Science Summit will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 8-9, 2025.

On 8 October, Rigshospitalet will host a high-level conference dedicated to advancing the implementation of the EU Life Science Strategy. Key stakeholders from across the European life science ecosystem will come together for in-depth roundtable discussions on five strategic topics. These collaborative sessions aim to generate valuable insights and provide concrete recommendations, which will be presented to the European Commission.

On October 8, Healthcare Denmark will also host a standing dinner reception in Copenhagen City Hall.

On October 9, Healthcare Denmark will host a high-level conference day: “Life Science: A Catalyst for European Competitiveness” at Maersk Tower, which is part of University of Copenhagen housing the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The conference will discuss how the European life science sector will be a catalyst for competitiveness with a close link to the EU Compass. The conference will focus on how Europe through public-private-partnerships can enhance competitiveness and attain strategic autonomy.

With a predominant focus on human health, the forthcoming European life science strategy will be an example of a forward-looking policy that intend to harness the potential of innovation and new technologies while upholding the core principles of universal access to high-quality care – a hallmark of healthcare in Europe.

With the Competitiveness Compass, the EU Commission has set a new political direction in which research and innovation is at the heart of boosting European competitiveness to ensure sustainable prosperity, aiming to develop and produce tomorrow’s technologies – made in Europe innovation. The Draghi Report highlights the life science industry, encompassing both pharmaceuticals and medical devices, as an example of what the EU can achieve in technology and innovative product development.

Therefore, Copenhagen Life Science Summit aims to facilitate broad stakeholder discussions on a number of thematic topics with the objective to shape policy discussions, the EU Strategy for Life Sciences, and a forthcoming Biotech Act.

Copenhagen Life Science Summit is hosted by Rigshospitalet and Healthcare Denmark. The programme will be coordinated in close collaboration with the Danish Ministry of the Interior and Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

In a coordinated effort, Rigshospitalet and Healthcare Denmark will invite international and national high-level governmental, non-governmental, and healthcare stakeholders to take part.

Participants will be high-level governmental, non-governmental, public and private stakeholders from the Life Science ecosystem in EU27+.

In addition to the international delegates, prominent and selected Danish public and private stakeholders from the Danish Life Science ecosystem will be invited to take part in Copenhagen Life Science Summit.

The life science sector is of strategic importance for Denmark and for Europe. The sector is unique as it contributes to scientific and medical breakthroughs, improves patients’ treatment and quality of life, and at the same time strongly contributes to economic growth, prosperity and, not least, robustness and security for Europe. The sector is under pressure globally, which is reflected in, among other things, a reduction in the number of clinical trials, falling investments and a reduction in the launches of new medicines and innovative medical devices in Europe.

The life science sector is one of Europe’s, including Denmark’s, most important industrial strengths and a fundamental building block of our society. For Europe, maintaining and expanding research and innovation efforts will be crucial for the sector. The building blocks to ensure such a development will be central themes for the Copenhagen Life Science Summit.

European “life sciences” as a term is broadly understood as the study of living systems, from microorganisms, plants, animals and human beings to ecosystems. It encompasses sectors from pharmaceuticals to agriculture, energy, food and feed. The forthcoming EU Life Science strategy will identify key challenges and opportunities to speed up the safe development, deployment and uptake of life sciences-based innovation, including to support the digital and green transitions of our society and economy.

In the context of Copenhagen Life Science Summit, it must be noted that it is Life Science with a specific focus on human health. In this regard, “Life Science” is a term that encompasses multiple fields including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical technology that focus on the research, development and commercialisation of a wide range of products that have a medical application. Such products include pharmaceuticals (i.e. everything from over-the-counter painkillers to advanced therapies for treating diseases such as cancer or HIV), medical devices (e.g. plasters, syringes, heart stents, pacemakers, etc) and diagnostics. However, the definition of life science varies from country to country.

In the context of Copenhagen Life Science Summit, “life science” is defined as described in the Danish Government’s Life Science Strategy: Pharmaceuticals, medical biotechnology, and medical devices, including health technology, assistive devices, welfare technology, health applications, AI solutions, etc.
